| The Hammer | 4/10/2008 | RE;Cell phone charging | This will be my third RTR and I have always seen 'Charging Stations' at all of the overnites. If it is full you can usually walk around and find an empty plug hidden somewhere. I was able to charge my Treo and my Garmin every nite. |
| The Hammer | 4/10/2008 | Room in Montrose | I just got a room in Montrose as well. They did have one or two more. I also cancelled my room in Delta (22 miles away) so there is one there as well. |

| Tom | 4/8/2008 | Dirt Road | The Dirt portion of the trip is on Friday, going over Cottonwood Pass. Not a Big Deal at all. Fairly Short, Pretty Smooth, I do not think it requires anythhing other than slowing down a litte and enjoying the ride. |
| RodeoQueen | 4/7/2008 | Starting late... | two riders looking for a ride from Denver (or Wyoming, if we're really lucky) to Cortez or Telluride to start RTR on Day 2 or Day 3. We're flexible and will split gas expenses.... |
| Doug Evans | 4/7/2008 | Dirt Road | The dirt road is on the west side of Cottonwood Pass. We will ride it after leaving Crested Butte on the way to Buena Vista on the next to last day. Contrary to some other comments, I think you will find it to be the highlight of the tour. I have ridden it twice with RTR. Once on an absolutely beautiful day and the other on a day that had torrential rain, snow, sleet wind...just about everything but sun. It was a fabulous ride. The grade is gradual, three to four percent all the way up, and the road bed is actually quite nice. It is extremely peaceful and quiet and really fun. Don't stress over it and don't worry about the need to switch tires. I have always used 700x23 and they work fine. The descent from the top is paved, and I might add, a blast. |
| Dan | 4/7/2008 | Share ride Breckenridge-Durango | Having completed RTR the last three years, I decided to try that "other" tour this year. I live in Breckenridge and will be driving to Durango on June 21. Looking for someone to share ride/gas from Breckenridge to Durango. I have an Impreza, can fit one person, bike and luggage. Hoping to leave early afternoon on June 21. |
| Lisa | 4/7/2008 | found hotel rooms | We found some hotel rooms for june 17 in montrose. Comfort Inn has cancellations. We got a room. |
| Liz McGarry | 4/5/2008 | Dirt Road? | What day and where is this dirt road I keep hearing about? Thanks. |
| KittySlayer | 4/4/2008 | Rider Communication | If you merely want your sister to know how far up the road you are then go with a low tech approach. Use some CHALK to mark on the road the time you went through a particular area. Our group has used this in the past on other tours. Some hints - do not endanger other riders marking your time on the road! Don't mark where cars will wear it away quickly. Agree on where you will mark, for instance all markings will be at a yellow sign or 20 feet before an intersection. You don't need to put a time at every sign, but this way you sister only has to look for a marking when she sees a sign or intersection or other agreed marking place. |
| Carrie Guss | 4/3/2008 | Riding partners | Hey, I'm new to Denver. Just looking for some riding partners who are doing ride the rockies. |
| Scott | 4/3/2008 | RE: Cell Phone Charging | Many people charge their cell phones inside the overnight facilities or where ever power outlets can be found. I have done this in the past and it works fine. You may also want to keep your phone off more than usual to help squeeze extra juice out of the battery. REI also has solar chargers that you could leave outside your tent. I guess these chargers will store up energy by leaving them out in the sun so you can use it later after the sun has gone down if need be. |
| Joanie | 4/3/2008 | Friends of Bill | Are there any Friends of Bill and Dr. Bob that plan on getting together during this trip? |
| Mike | 4/3/2008 | General response | This is my third ride in a row and I have learned some of this the hard way. Jeff, two way radios are almost worthless. We tried them last year and had no luck at all, cell phones aren't much better with spotty coverage in the high country. I would arrange meeting points along the route ahead of time. Robert, you can usually find outlets in the schools to plug into. As far as the dirt, this road can get pretty rough with more than it's share of wash board. I plan on using 25c tires with some tread for this section, the first 10 miles of it are pretty gentle until you hit the switch backs in the final 3-4 miles. Hope this helps. |
| John D'Angelo | 4/3/2008 | Training Rides in Windsor CO area | Anyone training in the Windsor CO area? Looking for training partner/s. JD |
| Tom | 4/3/2008 | 2005 Large Jersey wanted | Does anyone have a 2005 (Grand Junction to Breckenridge) size Large Jersey they don't want anymore? Looking to buy it based on condition. Contact me via e-mail. Regards, Tom |
| Jeff Thomas | 4/3/2008 | Rider Communication | Can anyone tell me which 2-way radio will work best on this ride in the mtns. I plan to be way ahead of my sister but still want to keep in touch. |
| Robert Trout | 4/2/2008 | Cell Phone Charging | Do any of you who have done RTR before know how riders who are sleeping outside can keep their cell phones charged up? |
| kellee | 4/2/2008 | 14 miles of dirt road | What's up with the 14 miles of hard-pack dirt road on the ride to Buena Vista? Do people recommend bringing a different set of tires for that day? |
| Phil | 4/1/2008 | Car Rental?? | Anyone know if Breckenridge offers any car rentals..e.g. Avis, Enterprise, Budget, etc.? I need to rent a car one way on the final Saturday so I can make it to Estes Park for my wife's family reunion. If anyone is going back to Estes Park area, I'd gladly split gas (heck, even pay for it all) to get a ride back up there. I need to leave Breckenridge by 10am though...so it would be a *very* early start that day. |
| jenn | 4/1/2008 | training rides | Is there anyone in the Austin TX area interested in doing some training rides??? |
| Janet | 4/1/2008 | Transport back to Durango? | We are planning to park cars in Durango, then take the bus back from Breckenridge. How do we get our bikes transported back from Durango to Breckenridge? |
| Davis Steffens | 3/31/2008 | Going back to Durango | I am also going back to Durango that saturday to try and do the BTOC. There is a bus sign up but there is a 35 person limit. Anyone have any suggestions?? |
| jlbwalleye | 3/31/2008 | MN | Anyone from the Twin Cities area driving out, with spare room on their bike rack? I'd drop off my bike at your location, throw in some gas $$, and buy a round of fat tires on the route. Also, I do have a trailer hitch bike rack that can hold 4 bikes. Just exploring options at this point. Thanks (jlbwalleye@aol.com) |
| Scott | 3/30/2008 | RE: Floor Pumps | Bring your own floor pump if you can spare the room or will have personal SAG. The ones that are available are usually so-so and there can be a 5-10 minute wait, especially in the mornings. |
| Lennie Oates | 3/30/2008 | Available Lodging | Have xtra hotel reservations for 1 motel room for Durango,Cortez,Montrose, and Gunnison for 1 room. Telluride and Crested Butte should not be a problem. Nothing for Buena Vista, impossible. You pay for the room and provide baggage service for the 3 in our party w/ your sag. |
| David | 3/29/2008 | Transportation From Ft. Collins | I am flying to Denver from Ohio for my first RTR. Daughter and her husband live in Ft. Collins, CO. Is anyone traveling from Ft. Collins to Durnago on Saturday, June 14 and have space for one rider and road bike? I would be willing to splint the cost...your vehicle or rental! |
| liz | 3/28/2008 | pumps | I do not recommend getting air in your tires at the end of the day. Usually it's a good idea to let some air out of your tubes so they don't explode while sitting in the sun. I heard tubes explode a few times in the night when I camped with RTR. Just an FYI. |
| Tom | 3/27/2008 | Re: Floor Pumps | I would recommend bringing your own, the community pumps provided last year always had a waiting line and were not in very good conditon. |
| JohnN | 3/27/2008 | Floor pumps | Yes, floor pumps are available. Yes, you should think about packing your own. Typically the floor pumps that are available are in bad shape. Some won't grip the stem well enough to allow you to pump, and others grip it so well that you end up tearing the stem off the tube trying to disengage. Bad pumps are annoying, but so is a heavy bag. Pick your poison. |
| Tom | 3/26/2008 | Car pooling / Training Grand Junction | Looking for others in Grand Junction that are participating in RTR, I know of 5 riders so far. Possiblilty of car pooling, training, etc.. |
| Tim | 3/26/2008 | Training buddy or buddies. | I am looking for somebody to ride with after work during the week. By Colorado Mills Mall. Alos I live in Frederick and would like to find somebody to ride with in that area. |
| KittySlayer | 3/26/2008 | Floor Pumps | So are floor pumps readily available at the overnight campgrounds or should our group think about packing our own? |
| molly | 3/24/2008 | training buddy? | I live in Rifle, Co and would be interested in riding with anyone in the Rifle - Glenwood Springs area. This is my first RTR and I'm an average rider. I'm pretty much following the schedule given on the website. |
| Jon | 3/21/2008 | Carpool | I will be flying into DIA from WI on either Fri 13th or Sat 14th. I was looking for someone to drive down to Durango with and split expenses. |
